Alerts heighten after two blasts at sport event

Boston Marathon bombing

Security measures in the US and other at-risk countries have tightened after Monday’s Boston Marathon explosions.

The blasts that claimed three lives and injured a further 140 people have been described by US officials as “an act of terror”.

The perpetrators of the attack and their motives are as yet unknown, but a White House official said: “Any event with multiple explosive devices – as this appears to be – is an act of terror, and will be approached as an act of terror.”

An investigation is under way to indentify the cause of the bombing, which struck on a US public holiday to mark Patriots’ Day.

UK authorities are now re-examining security measures for Sunday’s London marathon.

Security provisions for the funeral of former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher tomorrow will also be tightened, according to reports.
