Iran was struck by its most powerful earthquake for more than 50 years yesterday.
The 7.8 magnitude quake also sent tremors across Pakistan, India and the Middle East.
Iranian state television initially said at least 40 people were killed, but the station later retreated from this account. However, other reports said 30 people were killed in Pakistan.
The epicentre of the quake, which struck at 3:14pm local time at a depth of 18km, was located 95km north of the city of Saravan, according to the Iranian Seismological Center.
The border area has since been shaken by several aftershocks, including an earthquake measuring 5.7 on the Richter scale, which struck Iran’s south-eastern region.
UN secretary general Ban Ki-moon said the UN “stands ready to help” if necessary.
