Record rainfall and saturated soils are increasing flood risk across the UK, forcing insurers, brokers and businesses to rethink resilience, underwriting and the long-term sustainability of flood cover.

The Met Office has reported that rainfall was a ”defining feature” of January 2026, with the national meteorological service revealing that the UK recorded 117% of its long‑term average rainfall in that month – with Cornwall experiencing its wettest January on record, for example.
